Product overview

What Wordfence Premium does

Wordfence Premium combines a WordPress endpoint firewall, malware scanner and login security controls. The PHP-based firewall filters requests before they reach the application, while scans inspect site files for malicious code, backdoors, shells and known infection patterns. Administrators can also review traffic, receive alerts and manage several sites through Wordfence Central.

A Premium subscription adds real-time firewall rules and malware signatures, a continuously updated IP blocklist, country blocking and an Audit Log. These licensed services depend on a valid key and connections to Wordfence infrastructure. The plugin alone does not provide the developer’s paid services.

Key features

  • Web application firewall: filters malicious requests and includes rate limiting and brute-force protection.
  • Malware scanner: checks WordPress files for suspicious code, malicious URLs and infection patterns.
  • Login security: supports two-factor authentication, passkeys and reCAPTCHA, with controls for XML-RPC and login attempts.
  • Premium threat intelligence: a valid Premium license provides immediate firewall rule and malware signature updates rather than the free plan’s delayed feed.
  • Monitoring and blocking: licensed users can use the Premium IP blocklist, country blocking and remotely stored Audit Log events.

Who it is for

Wordfence suits administrators who want security controls inside WordPress and are prepared to review scan results and firewall events. Premium is intended for self-administered sites that need newer threat intelligence without waiting for the free feed. Wordfence Central is useful when the same person or team maintains several installations.

It is not a substitute for updates, backups, strong account practices or incident response. Care and Response are separate service plans; their hands-on cleanup and analyst support should not be confused with a Premium plugin download.

Things to know

Exact WordPress and PHP compatibility has not been verified for this package. Check the current official requirements against your server before installation. No license key, developer support or automatic updates are included, so licensed Premium feeds, support and related cloud functions are not part of this download.

The source listing also contains a separate activator archive. It is an additional third-party file, not a required part of the main plugin installation. No malware scan can prove that a third-party archive is safe; check its provenance and inspect the code before use.

Firewall Extended Protection changes server configuration files, and scans can use substantial hosting resources. Review these settings on staging, especially on shared hosting or alongside other security plugins.

What changed in Wordfence Premium 9.0.2

The official September 30, 2026 changelog describes a maintenance release. REST API user-enumeration protection was hardened, WordPress Playground compatibility improved, and the IPv6 diagnostic result became informational. Increased-attack-rate emails now include a help link.

Fixes address WAF JSON processing for array values, early translation calls, login-page translation and PHP 8.1 deprecation notices. A virtualizer dependency update fixes Firefox tab crashes on screens with many DOM elements, including running scans. Other changes improve handling of module script tags when plugin directories are renamed, restore a missed return value in an Audit Log filter, and remove obsolete CSS.

Installation and rollback

Back up the site files and database first. Export the existing Wordfence settings if you are replacing an installation. On a staging copy, open Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, upload only the main plugin ZIP and activate it. Review the firewall mode before enabling Extended Protection, then test logins, scans, alerts and normal site traffic.

For rollback, deactivate the plugin and restore the previous plugin files from a known backup. Do not enable deletion of Wordfence tables on deactivation unless you intend to erase its settings and data. If Extended Protection was configured, follow the official removal procedure before restoring an earlier setup. Test the rollback on staging and confirm that the firewall and login protection work afterward.

Our take

Wordfence brings firewall, scanning and login controls into one WordPress plugin. The paid plan is most useful for its current threat intelligence and event history, which require a valid license and external services. Version 9.0.2 is largely a maintenance release. Test firewall optimization and scans on staging, and review any third-party package before putting it on a production site.

Good

  • Endpoint firewall and malware scanner built for WordPress
  • Two-factor authentication, passkeys and brute-force controls
  • Licensed Premium adds real-time threat intelligence and IP blocking
  • Optional Audit Log records site events through Wordfence Central

Watch out

  • Premium services require a valid license and external connections
  • Firewall optimization and scans need careful server configuration
  • Exact WordPress and PHP compatibility has not been verified
  • No license key, developer support or automatic updates included

Requirements and compatibility

  • Exact WordPress and PHP requirements have not been verified for this package.
  • Test the main package and each addon on a staging site before updating production.
  • A license key is not included. Developer support, automatic updates and cloud services are separate offerings from the original developer.

How to install Wordfence Premium

  1. Download the main package on this page. Keep addons for later unless you need their features.
  2. In WordPress, open Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, upload the ZIP and activate it after installation.
  3. Install additional packages only after checking that the main product works with your site.
  4. Test your critical workflow on a staging site before updating production.

Wordfence Premium FAQ

What does Wordfence Premium add to the free plugin?

A valid Premium license adds real-time firewall rules and malware signatures, the Premium IP blocklist, country blocking, Audit Log features and ticket-based support.

Are a license key, support and automatic updates included?

No. This package includes no license key, developer support or automatic updates, and licensed Wordfence services require a valid key.

Is the separate activator archive required?

No. It is an additional third-party file in the source listing, not a required component of the official Wordfence plugin installation.

What changed in Wordfence 9.0.2?

The official release hardens REST API user-enumeration protection, improves Playground compatibility and fixes issues involving WAF JSON processing, translations, PHP 8.1 notices and Firefox scan screens.

How should I prepare for rollback?

Back up files and the database, export Wordfence settings and test the previous version on staging. Account for Extended Protection changes and avoid deleting plugin data during deactivation.
